Exquisite Decorative Footed EMBOSSED LARGE TEAPOT from MYOTT SON & Co.,
Pattern ORIENT, Rust & Green Flowers, Green & Black Leaves w/GOLD, from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, circa 1900-1907
DESCRIPTION:
The beautiful scalloped & embossed, footed large teapot was produced in a striking rust, black, brown & green color palette on high white porcelain. The floral patches look so bold with their vivid colors displayed in front of the leaves that are green, brown & black.
The black leaves have gold veining on them. The teapot near the top rim has stippled gold as does the spout and the top of the lid. The rims are beautifully trimmed in a gold. The handle & spout are also accented in gold. The spout has the cutest swirls embossed on each side and this is repeated on a larger scale on the body of the teapot.
CONDITION:
While this teapot is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks or wear to the gold.
DIMENSIONS:
The teapot has a widest diameter of 5 5/8" with a height of 6 3/4" to the top of the lid. The tip of the spout has a height of 5 1/8". Handle to spout, the teapot is 10 1/4".
HISTORY/MARKS:
This pottery began in 1888 by George Thomas Mountford at the Alexander Pottery on Wolfe Street in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, UK and was acquired by Ashley Myott, Son & Company upon Mountford’s death in 1897. Ashley had been apprenticed to Mountford since 1895. At the age of 19 in 1897, he became manager of Alexander Pottery. The name Myott, Son & Co. was used from 1898 with incorporation in 1942. It was known as a manufacturer of good quality, medium priced tableware and ornamental earthenware. A fire in 1949 destroyed the records of the business including its pattern books. The mark on this piece was used 1900-1907 as cited in Geoffrey A. Godden’s Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks. He cites this as mark #2810 which was used 1900+ with another mark started being used in 1907. There may have been some overlap between the use of the two marks.
